West Elm seems to be obsessed with this new texture and has been showing up on comforters and pillows all over the web.

After looking through all the photos on West Elm’s website I am seriously considering making a new duvet cover. I love the added texture. It will work well for my “just through it on the bed” style. However, I really want a duvet for a thinner blanket only, not a down comforter. The down blanket gets far too hot and I want to be able to put it away in the winter. I love my current duvet so much that I generally just push the comforter on the floor in the winter. It would be nice to have a summer set. But would this still look as good on a thin blanket?
For this tutorial, I down-sized so it will look a little different from the duvet example.
First, draw small circles on the back of your fabric. My circles are 1.5 inches apart. The second row should be off-set from the first row. This will create the diamond look. As you can see my circles are not very perfect. This texture will hide imperfections so they do not need to be exact. Try to keep your spacing equal. That will show once you have all your tucks complete.
Yep, this one has to be hand stitched sorry! For larger projects, such as the duvet you may get away with machine sewing the bunch together. But for his one, get out that needle. Stitch around the circle you drew. Again, this is obviously not perfect. You just need to make sure you have gathered the material and that the area is about the same size. Pull the thread tight and tie in a double knot.
This color combination is not recommended. I used it so the stitching would show up better in pictures for this tutorial. Unfortunately, this photo kind of reminds me of stitches from a cut.
Flip it over and ta-da a cool new texture to add to your bag of tricks. You can adjust each of the gathers until you are happy with the texture.
Play around with ironing the gather as well. It ruins the flowing waves but it creates some interesting lines and shapes.
I have started a board on Pinterest to house inspirational projects using different textures and fabrics. Check it out!

When do you have time to do all this? I really think a summer duvet is a great idea. Then with all the extra texture it’ll still fluff up a little.
