Look at that dapper cat! My Mr. Mosby is one good looking kitty with a little bow tie. I mean he is a good looking kitty without the bowtie…
Someone at work started Tie Thursday it didn’t last very long, but it was fun. I think if it had a trendier name it would have lasted longer. Tie Thursday just doesn’t roll off the tongue. Tie Tuesday might have been better. Well, I was inspired by all the ties around the office to make Mosby one. He knows what it means to Suit Up.
I have seen cute pet bow ties at the store, but they seriously want like $12 for it. Seriously. Well, I used some scrap fabric, made one super quickly, for well under $12. I used a sewing machine to stitch it together, but it would be super easy to do with hot glue only. Basically, you just want a way to keep the edges tucked in.
DIY Cat Bow Tie Instructions
My final bow tie was about 1.5 by 5in. If you want it larger or smaller adject the size of your original piece of material accordingly.
1. Cut 2 pieces of fabric: 3in by 12in for the body of the bow and 1in by 5in for the tie. I used a textured canvas for my bow tie. I would stay away from knits or anything with a stretch but other than that you can experiment with different fabrics.
2. Fold both strips in half, lengthwise, and sew the edge with a small 1/4″ seam allowance. If you are using a hot glue gun, no worries! Run a thin line along the edge to keep the edges together.
3. Turn the tubes inside out and press it flat. Keep the seam in the center so you do not see the sewn edge from the outside.
4. Fold the bow tie in thirds with about an inch overlap. Use a couple drops of hot glue to keep the edges together.
5. Use the smaller tie piece to wrap around the middle of the bow tie to keep everything in place. You want it a little tight to give the rippled look. Wrap around the tie once and secure with hot glue. The rest should make a loop on the back. The loop only needs to be as big as the collar on your pet. Hot glue the end down to keep it secure. You could also use velcro or a snap to make it easily removable.
6. Slip in onto your pet’s collar and let the modeling begin. May I also suggest a tux to go along with it?

Winston’s hair is too long, so she can’t wear collars! But if she could- I’d make her one of these! So cute!!
Lauren says
Yeah, short hair does help. Plus he has always worn a collar so that isn’t a big deal.

Too cute!

I’m normally against dressing up pets. For any reason. But a cat in a bowtie just sort of makes sense in this mad, mad world.
Lauren says
I almost don’t associate a bow tie with dressing up your pet… Kind of just fits.

Cuteness overload!

Love this! I don’t think my cat will let me put a bow tie on him.
